Myanmar 2015
At the entrance to the Pankam Village monastery, young Burmese Monks practice the art of modern warfare. In a country shrouded by civil war, rebel groups regularly patrol and war is so close that guns, even fake ones such as these, provoke little reaction. In Myanmar, only religion and war are constants and it is no surprise that the two, so at odds with each other ideologically, should mix so freely.
Myanmar is at a crossroads, the country is determined to open up and embrace the outside world. For so long it has nurtured a deep and proud culture, religion thrives but war and poor governance has hampered its development. Aung San Suu Kyi has just been elected in the first democratic elections in a lifetime. As the modern world races to get a foothold in the country it remains to be seen what consumerism will spare and what will remain in this beautiful corner of Asia.
